Overview

EEA Family Permit is granted for family of EEA nationals who stay and are citizens of countries which are not included n European Economic Area (EEA).

The non-EEA family member requires an EEA family permit before travelling to the UK for stay in the country with the EEA national. The non-EEA family member must travel to UK along with the EEA national or should join him/her there.

Define EEA

European Economic Area (EEA) consists of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Although Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the European Union (EU), their citizens have the same rights as EU citizens to enter, live in and work in the UK.

Who are Family Members of EEA Nationals?

Family members or dependents include:

• Husband/wife/civil partner
• Children or grandchildren (or the children or grandchildren of husband/wife/ civil partner) who are below age 21 years of age or are dependent on you
• Parents or grandparents of you and your husband/wife/civil partner, if they are dependent on you

Other Conditions:

EEA nationals who are students can only bring their husband/wife/civil partner and their dependent children

Other eligible relatives - Extended family members such as brothers, sisters and cousins do not have an automatic right to live in the UK. They have to show they are completely dependent on the EEA national to get EEA family permit

Essential Documents

• Original passport or identity card of the EEA national
• Proof of your relationship to the EEA national
• A letter from the EEA national, declaring that you are travelling with them or are joining them in the UK
• EEA national's unmarried/civil partners have to provide evidence that they have been in a relationship akin to marriage for more than 2 years

Visa Fee & Processing Time

There is no application fee for an EEA family permit.

Visa processing time is between 12-24 weeks after submission of application.
