Canada Declares Significant Study And Work Visa Reform For Fall 2020

Canada is making a significant reform to its Post-Graduation Work (P.G.W.P) Permit rules for global students who desire to study in Canada starting this fall.

The P.G.W.P permits global students to obtain work experience in Canada following the completion of their education program at a designated learning institute (D.L.I) in Canada.

Global students should have finished a full-time program of minimum 8 months in length at a D.L.I to be qualified for the P.G.W.P. Their study program needs to lead to a diploma, certificate, or degree. The final length of the P.G.W.P depends on the duration of the study program in Canada.

Students Can Start Program Online, and Still be Qualified for 3-Year P.G.W.P after Landing in Canada

Usually, online courses don't include in the study demand for a P.G.W.P application. However, provided coronavirus-related travel delays around the globe, Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) is now admitting global students to study online while abroad and still be qualified to apply for the Canadian work permit following graduation. I.R.C.C announced the change in the evening of 14 May 2020.

New global students can start their programs at a Canada’s D.L.I online in the fall 2020 and finish up to 50% of the program while overseas, and then still be able to receive the P.G.W.P to work in Canada following finishing their studies.

I.R.C.C also noted that global students will not have time decreased from the length of their P.G.W.P for the time they spent Canada outside, up to 31 December 2020.
